Carbon Positive

Human activities impacting global climate change can be divided into three different types of categories: carbon negative, carbon neutral and carbon positive.

Carbon negative activities contribute CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Burning fossil fuels without CO2 emission control is an example of a carbon negative activity. Carbon neutral activities are those that contribute no net CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Examples would include the use of non-fossil fuel energy sources such as nuclear, wind or solar. Individuals and companies might also strive to be carbon neutral by engaging in carbon positive activities that offset their carbon negative activities. Carbon positive activities eliminate more CO2 emissions than they contribute to the atmosphere. Examples would include planting trees and employing energy efficiency technology to reduce demand for fossil fuels. IES’ CO2 Reduction Technology is carbon positive because the amount of CO2 emissions it eliminates exceeds those created to supply the technology’s energy requirements.
